Georgia Updates

September 2010
City leaders in Thomasville have started a "listening process" in order to have a more racially diverse strategic planning team. They are gathering African-American leaders to hear their perspectives, glean from their wisdom, and share the Loving Our Communities to Christ vision, hoping to draw some of them into leadership. Five issues have risen to the surface through this process with the "hub" issue being church unity and communication. Thomasville coach Howard Boyd reports, "People see the Church as having a coordinating function in the community. Without unity and communication, the various ministries and agencies are less effective."

April 2010
Southern Baptists Provide Relief to Georgia Flood Victims. More than 300 volunteers from some 50 Southern Baptist disaster relief crews from nine state conventions are now on the scene in the west Atlanta areas ravaged by September floods preparing meals for victims and volunteers, cleaning out muddy homes and removing debris.

May 2010
Exciting elements of all three levels of Pray-Care-Share are happening in Thomasville. Foru congregations are doing the Alpha evangelism course together and three of them are hosting Alpha in local, county-funded high schools during lunch hour -- about 35 percent of the students are participating! Approximately 1,200 youth attended a major youth outreach, and several thousand were expected for an InsideOut youth ministry event in March with concerts, testimonies, services tents, a prayer tent, and more. Churches are planning a festival-style serving day in the community in 2011. As they use 2010 as training ground, it will be an opportunity to work with community ministries and congregations in collaboration.
