El Paso sits on the U.S.-Mexico border within walking distance to
Juarez,
Mexico, and about 40 miles from
Las Cruces,
New Mexico. This tri-city region forms the largest bi-national metropolitan area in the world (population 2,000,000). Due to a large Hispanic presence in the region, a large percentage of the population is Roman Catholic. The Church in this tri-city area has good rapport in the community and with local government. Both the mayor of
El Paso and the mayor of
Juarez have invited local leaders to meet and pray with them. However, the area is also a flashpoint—an entrance for drugs being imported into the
United States. As Christians in these cities unite to pray, care, and share for and with non-believers, the enemy is fighting for a stronghold.
God has knitted the hearts of key leaders in these three strategic cities. Although uniquely different, these leaders agree that they must continue to call their churches together to first love their communities, and then their regions, to Christ. In El Paso I met with 150 key leaders regarding LC2C. Part of their developing vision is to pray for and to telephone every home in the city. Their Christian mayor is very encouraging and supportive of the LC2C effort.
In Juarez I shared a vision of their leaders raising up an army of thousands of believers to Love Their Community to Christ, and I’ve been invited back to meet with a broader representation of pastors/leaders to train and prep them for the harvest. The mayor recently made a decision that the city will close down 140 adult businesses in Juarez . . . he has asked the churches to help rehabilitate all those who will be unemployed and to help them find new work. The churches have accepted this challenge.
